Biography 
J. Stanley Atwell’s areas of practice include corporate and business, estate and personal planning, estate and trust administration, limited liability companies and partnerships, and taxation. Stan often addresses specific questions regarding tax law and asset protection strategies and is a frequent lecturer in the areas of estate planning and administration. In addition, Stan is a Certified Public Accountant and a Board Certified Specialist in Estate Planning and Probate Law.

Stan was elected membership as a fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. He has served as Chair of the Estate Planning and Fiduciary Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association, as President of the Greensboro Estate Planning Council and as Chair of the Continuing Professional Education Committee of the North Carolina Association of CPAs. He is an Elder of Guilford Park Presbyterian Church and past Chair of its Finance Committee.

Raised in the Charlotte area, Stan and his wife Jill have two daughters, Claire and Hayley. His love of music has been known to serenade attendees (with guitar in hand) at the firm's annual Business & Tax Seminar, and is shown in his support of local community arts events as a member of the board of directors for Piedmont Blues Preservation Society.

  • Assisted physician in establishing life insurance trust to protect assets from claims of creditors and to prevent includibility of life insurance in physician’s estate for estate tax purposes.
  • Assisted in the formation of limited partnerships designed to preserve (a) capital gains treatment upon sale of subdivided real estate, (b) avoid creditor’s claims against real estate contributed to the partnership and, (c) permit gifting of partnership interests to family members without causing a loss of control of the partnership operations.
  • Resolution of estate dispute involving multi-million dollar family business interest and split- up of same.
