Biography Howard Borum practices in the area of commercial real estate with a focus on commercial real estate development and commercial real estate finance. His clients include individual and corporate owners and developers of office, retail, industrial, and residential projects and he also serves as counsel to banks and other lenders in commercial real estate finance transactions.
As a Board Certified Specialist since 1987 in Real Property Law: Business, Commercial and Industrial Transactions with 30 years of experience, Howard has significant experience in handling all aspects of commercial real estate; from the acquisition of land, financing, and construction, to the operation, management, and leasing of commercial real estate projects. His experience includes representing clients in the acquisition and assemblage of raw land; drafting and negotiating financing documents; drafting and negotiating purchase and sale agreements, ground leases, reciprocal easement agreements, restrictive covenants, and condominium documents; structuring and negotiating joint ventures between institutional investors and developers; drafting and negotiating sophisticated architectural and construction contracts; and drafting and negotiating leases and third-party property management agreements. Howard has worked on an extensive range of development projects including senior living communities, from full service licensed rental communities (independent and assisted living), to continuing care retirement communities, apartment communities, including age-restricted apartment communities, shopping centers, medical office buildings, and office parks in North Carolina, throughout the Southeast and on the West Coast.
Howard has extensive experience representing banks in real estate finance transactions including acquisition loans, construction and real estate development lending, and loan workouts and foreclosures. Howard handles all aspects of structuring, negotiating, documenting, and closing loans and other real estate secured transactions. He has represented banks and lenders in transactions involving residential, office, and retail developments, apartment communities, industrial projects, golf courses and hotels.
A native from Greensboro, NC, Howard graduated from North Carolina State University in 1977 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1980. He is a member of the North Carolina and Greensboro Bar Associations and the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). He is also a member of the North Carolina Bar Association Real Property Law Section and served as its chair from 1994-1995.
Outside the office, Howard enjoys reading, travel, boating, and hiking.
